Welcome to the website for Indivisible MDI, home of the persistance on Mount Desert Island, Maine.

9/1/2021 – Group leaders announced an indefinite hiatus for regular monthly meetings and daily calls to action.   We remain alert to current events and will share what we know as appropriate on the official IMDI FaceBook page (Indivisible MDI – a private group.)   We will consider how best to go forward when that seems appropriate.   Please visit the Contact Us page for information on how to connect with us, and recognize that we are not reading our email every day.

Indivisible MDI is dedicated to opposing corruption, racism, authoritarianism and their destructive effect on our democracy. We advocate for policies which protect our democracy and promote equity and justice for all.

Members come from every town on the island, and we welcome people who are living here temporarily, or who are here on vacation. Keep your activism muscles in good shape – join us for an event!

For your safety and everyone else’s, please wear a mask.

Free parking is available at the Connors Emerson School.

Co-hosted by Indivisible MDI and YWCA of Mount Desert Island.

Should you want to bring a sign you make at home, the national organizers are asking that we focus messaging on reproductive justice.   Specifically, they have asked that we avoid images of coathangers and hand maids.  Here’s why:

Coat-hanger imagery:- We do not want to accidentally reinforce the right wing talking points that self-managed abortions are dangerous, scary and harmful.

Handmaid’s Tale themed: The use of Handmaid’s Tale imagery to characterize the controlling of women’s reproduction has proliferated, primarily by white women across the country, since the show has gained popularity. This message continues to create more fragmentation, often around race and class, because it erases the fact that Black women, undocumented women, incarcerated women, poor women and disabled women have always had their reproduction freedom controlled in this country. This is not a dystopian past or future.

You may use your own words, but if you are open to suggestions, words shared by the national organizers with us are:

“Everyone loves someone who has had an abortion” (courtesy of We Testify & the National Network of Abortion Funds)
Abortion: legal, accessible & funded/free.
Abortion: Anytime. Any reason. (courtesy of We Testify)
Roe is the floor, not the ceiling; it’s time for more!
We’re done compromising: abortion justice for all!
Build power, protect Roe, reach for more!
Fund abortion, build power! (courtesy of the National Network of Abortion Funds)
Saving Roe is not enough. We need Abortion Justice. (courtesy of All* Above All)
Abortion is healthcare.
The courts don’t decide our destiny, we do.
Abortion today, tomorrow, forever.
Your reason is the right reason. (courtesy of We Testify)
There’s no freedom without access.
Abortion is unstoppable! (courtesy of Reproaction)
I love someone who had an abortion.
Abortion justice can’t wait. (Courtesy of All* Above All)

DO NOT USE: “Safe, legal, and rare” as it is stigmatizing and contends that abortion is not something that should be happening, thus it should be rare and reduced. There will be as many abortions as there need to be. The anti-abortion movement does not get to dictate who has abortions and why.

Protect the Results De-escalation Training

Length: about 1.5 hours

Protect the Results is a national coalition of groups that will mobilize to take action should the current President follow through on his threats and reject the results of the election. If that happens, we will mobilize (proposed date/time is Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 5 p.m. local time), much the way we did with the Red Line event concerning the Mueller investigation – we commit to action and if action is needed, we respond and turn out.) There are over 100 organizations, including National Indivisible, that are a part of this effort. To indicate that you want to be a part of this action IF IT HAPPENS, please go to https://protecttheresults.com/ and search for the zip code 04609 so we know of your interest.

In addition, FREE 1.5 hour virtual trainings are being offered in De-escalation prior to this potential event These trainings (you only need to attend one) will offer you the ability to learn skills to you should you meet and need to interact with counter protestors. The classes are being taught by Clara Porter of Prevention Action Change and are being offered by Mainers for Accountable Leadership. Pre-registration for the classes is required.

Please sign up to Protect the Results AND for one of the de-escalation trainings.

Honor RBG
8 p.m. Bar Harbor Village Green
Corner of Main Street and Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Join us at 8 p.m. on Sunday, 20 September 2020, on the Bar Harbor Village Green to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the courageous life of service she led.

This event will be a socially distanced, masked vigil as we mourn and honor her legacy.

We ask that you bring a candle in a mason jar or other glass container (votive candles are great!) to line the sidewalks of the Village Green. If you also want to bring a handle to hold, please do so.

RBG was a fierce champion of justice and equality on the Supreme Court. We owe her an enormous debt of gratitude, and we must fight hard to uphold the ideals of equality and justice to which she dedicated her life.

May her memory be a blessing.

Trumps Legacy

Friday, June 5, 2020, 6:30 p.m. Bar Harbor Village Green

Trump’s Legacy: War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death

The President is visiting Maine and the hard working people at Puritan Medical Products today. But we will not forget: his response to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 109,000 deaths in the US. His response to the state sanctioned murder of Black people has ignited protests across the country. He has militarized our streets and encouraged attacks on news media

Join us to express your righteous anger, sorrow, and distress. Everything this President touches dies, so protect yourself — wear a mask and observe social distancing.

On Monday, 9/10/2018, we joined with other Indivisible groups in Maine to sponsor ads in the Bangor Daily News and the Portland Press Herald opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Our April 2018 meeting featured a presentation by Chris Cayer of MoreVoice.org about Ranked Choice Voting. It is important for everyone to understand that the June 12 election will be using ranked choice voting for primaries AND will include a statewide ballot question about continuing Ranked Choice Voting in the future. Links to information presented at the meeting are below.
